Tutelage"Miss Strider. Miss Strider! Are you even paying attention?"
Garnet's head jerked up from the desk, a sheet of notebook paper stuck to the side of her face. "Renee," she corrected automatically. "And I don't need to pay attention. I already know all this." A few of the older students giggled. She was still short compared to most of them—at twelve she was already in the advanced classes, and read through the material faster than her teachers could keep up.
"Alright then," the teacher said, lowering his brows and stepping aside. "Would you like to teach the class?"
Garnet shrugged. "Sure." She pulled the sheet of paper off the side of her face (resulting in a few more giggles) and swung her legs around, pushing herself out of her seat. With an arrogant sway to her hips, she strutted to the front of the room and spun to face the class. "Paradox and chaos, right? So who didn't understand Mr. Boring's explanation?"
"Boehring," he corrected as a few students
DescentIt had been a few days since Garnet had slipped out of the Wise Man's grasp. She intended on returning, but only after she had gotten at least one step ahead of him. She wanted to be holding more of the cards, to reduce the risk of being discarded when all was said and done. With this in mind, she had set out in search of the girl that the Wise Man kept trying to capture. "That was a clever little trick, Athena. I thought we were working together now?"
"So did I," she said with a sneer. "Got that door fixed
Coming HomeThe Wise Man sat alone in a darkened room, the only light coming from what looked like a flat screen in front of him, though there was no electrical device attached to it. The only other thing in the room was the chair on which he was sitting, watching intently as though waiting for something to happen. He had been tracking Garnet’s movements ever since they had parted ways. He had thought for a moment that the old man was going to ruin everything, but Garnet’s temper won out in the end. She needn’t know that what the Wise Man had achieved was not the same as true Singularity. It was close enough for his purposes. Close enough to make her… manageable, if not stable. He had sewn her together with the same dark energy he’d used so many times to spare her life in the past, and thus there was a little of himself in her now. That was key. He now had a way to call her back to him should she stray. She had a strong will, but with time he would use that will for
